This holiday season was the first in over 6 years I wasn’t running Pressbound full-time. It gave me a lot of perspective and helped me appreciate more than ever the decision I made to take a step back from running a handmade business. I wasn’t schlepping my work around to several shows or events each week. I wasn’t spending all my time in the studio packaging and shipping orders. I wasn’t scrambling to stay on top of producing inventory and packaging products late into the night while watching Netflix. I wasn’t frantically posting my work to social media or holding special black Friday, cyber Monday, free shipping, etc sales to get you to buy my work. It was a huge relief. I didn’t miss any of it. And although things at my job were really busy I wasn’t nearly as exhausted.
When I actually participated in a holiday show I found myself wishing I were anywhere but there. My sales reflected that too. I don’t have a good poker face. All my work was 50% off and it just wasn’t moving as quickly as it should. So I probably won’t be participating in any shows or events for a long while. In the studio, shipping orders felt like a chore. I’m completely detached from my old work. And it’s clear I’m ready to move on.
Yesterday I let the hosting account for the Pressbound website and blog expire. So that site, although no longer live anyway, is officially gone. Although I still own the pressbound.com domain—that will bounce you to my Etsy shop for now. My Etsy shop, however, is in vacation mode and I’m not sure if or when I will open back up again. I may try one final “last chance” sale in January and then call it a day with all my old product.
Next year will be an opportunity to explore new creative outlets and mediums with a completely clean slate. That is what I need. I know it will lead me somewhere exciting. I’m really looking forward to sharing more of that with you, as well as advice and musings each Wednesday about entrepreneurship, careers, and creativity here on the blog. I’ll be taking a break for the next couple of weeks, starting back up on January 10. Be sure to sign up for my email list so you don’t miss a thing.
Until next year, thank you so much for your support in 2015! Have a wonderful relaxing holiday and happy new year!
